NECW Series Report(2): Global Energy-saving Organizations Share Green Experience in Beijing

On June 11th, the seminar focused on Green Experience Sharing opened in Beijing. Invited by NECC, participants included various environment protection and sustainable development organizations, such as: Natural Resources Defense Council(NRDC), Top 10 Switzerland, WWF, GIZ, Innovation Center for Energy and Transportation(iCET), China Youth Climate Action Network(CYCAN), Rocky Mountain Institute(RMI), Institute for Transportation and Development Policy(ITDP) and innovative Green Development Program(iGDP).

During the seminar, NECC highlighted the important roles played by each parties from community and appreciated their contribution in energy-saving sector. For example, the introduction of sustainable energy management system has greatly benefited Chinese SMEs in that the majority of SMEs have huge potential in energy conservation due to their limited employee framework and weak energy management experience. Whereas the sustainable energy management system promised stable profit acceleration from long-term energy conservation.

Therefore, NRDC and Suzhou city launched a joint pilot program in 2016 to help six enterprises from electronics and chemical fiber industries improve their own sustainable energy management systems. Now this program has succeeded in great return on investment and will be further promoted to other sectors.

Besides, the energy consumption in construction industry has largely scaled up as the urbanization develops in China, hence the economic profit by improving energy efficiency is very sizable. At the same time, the electricity consumption growth from business buildings and households air conditioning use takes the fastest speed, China is the biggest consumer of cooling energy consumption in the world, which means it becomes a key battle for Chinese energy conservation industry.

With regarding to energy-saving in transportation field, guests from World Bank, GIZ and iCET shared their viewpoints through different programs respectively, such as TransFORM, how transmodality helps energy-saving and Chinese Green Vehicles List Project. In recent years, China’s transportation sector has maintained a relatively high growth rate, and has now become the third largest energy-using industry after industrial and consumer consumption. The structural adjustment and optimization of the transportation sector have enormous potential for energy conservation. At the same time, the electrification of the transportation sector and the development of clean energy vehicles will contribute to the realization of national energy conservation and emission reduction targets.
